First run of this SCABEE Teaching Case Study

During the second half of November, a class of 50 second-year students from ESTA Belfort worked on the Teaching Case Study “Ananké: It’s all about Energy!” developed by ESTA Belfort and Silesia University of Technology in partnership with the French company Ananké.

The Teaching Case Study (TCS) puts students in a situation where they must prepare an internal project meeting where they shall suggest their selected best of four potential solutions of a heat exchanger installation to valorise waste heat.

The case stipulates two applications:

· Reinjection of preheated air into the oven that produces the waste heat

· Utilisation of the waste heat to heat the shopfloor

For both applications, two different heat exchangers can be chosen. The TCS includes a short description, minutes of previous meetings realised by a colleague on paternity leave, as well as price offers from different suppliers.

Students started with individually reading the scenario document to get a first idea of the content and to prepare the group session. During this session, they did a financial as well as a performance analysis for the four solutions. This step allowed them to get all necessary information to conduct a benchmark and to argue for one of the four solutions. Of course, prices, return on invest and ecological benefits are not the same, and they have to chose where to put the focus!

The test has shown that all information and data have been given, but participants rather used a student approach then a professional one, just looking for data to put in the provided form. Therefore, they passed all beside some important information hidden in the description and minutes that influence the findings as well as the argumentation. The TCS description has been updated to avoid similar difficulties in the future.

In a second step, the different groups transformed the case situation into a project plan, including a Work Breakdown Structure, a Gantt diagram, and a risk analysis. Through this, the Teaching Case Study well fit to the Project Management lecture and will be reused with future classes.
